The resort was one of those swanky joints perched mountainside on the outskirts of town. A kind of palace that couldn’t help but put your own ladder climb into perspective no matter what your station was in life. Water features and slippery lacquer under polished crystal in the lobby. Real cosmopolitan and all. And sure, I’d been there once or twice before. Sipped my share of highballs on the terrace with a birds-eye view of every looker in the valley who had a poolside penchant for late afternoon spritzers and opportune laps of luxury. Still, I’d never actually booked myself a room before she came into the picture. We’d made each other’s acquaintance early on a Friday evening. And the pleasure had been more than mutual. So to speak. But by late Saturday night, stranded mountainside, it seemed that even hard luck was hard-pressed to come knocking at my door. Until that is, as luck would have it, Emily Burke came knocking once again. . . .
